My doctor says I have low white blood count. I was reading here on the internet that this can lead to infections such as sepsis ? How ? You would have to be exposed first wouldn’t you ? My count is 4.4 by the way. She wants me to see a hematologist. People are telling me that is considered in the normal range but mine was 6. something and I guess she might be concerned because it is going lower and might get lower yet . I have to talk to her tomorrow not just the nurse for pete’s sake.

We are all constantly exposed to potentially harmful bacteria and viruses. Our immune systems protect us from these pathogens and white blood cells are an important part of that process. Your low white blood cell count means that you are more prone to develop an infection and will have a harder time fighting it off than a healthy person would. It’s true that you need to be exposed to the pathogen before infection occurs, but we are exposed to pathogens constantly in a normal environment. Good luck with your doctor’s visit.
