This sounds like a primary research article published in a peer-reviewed, academic journal. If that’s true, and if the article was recently published, then this research represents the cutting edge. Not many people on this planet, besides other primary investigators into similar questions will be able to help you. Honestly, even if I knew it like the back of my hand, I’m not sure I’d want to explain the concepts to you, and do you work for you/deprive you of this valuable learning opportunity. The good news is, even though they’re not written at a 2nd grade reading level, any college student should be able to decipher the text of a primary research paper, even a community college student! (I had to read and report these all the time at university.) Just take it section by section: abstract, introduction, methods, etc. The most important parts are the conclusion and results.

You’re welcome!
