Why is it dangerous to go tanning while pregnant / ttc?

I don’t go to the tanning beds like a lot of people I know– I go on ocassion to help clear up my skin during breakouts (it seems to be one of the only ways to clear up). I heard that it’s dangerous to do while pregnant, and I’m wondering why. My hubby and I are ttc, so we’re taking all things into consideration.

Also, is it dangerous for him as well? He enjoys going when I do, and I’m not sure if it has an effect on his sprem.
to the person who was talking about vanity and safety. OBVIOUSLY I care about safety, that’s why I asked the question. And, I know that tanning causes skin cancer, I’m not an idiot. Please read to see that I only do it ocassionally to clear up acne, not to fake and bake myself into tanned leather. Thanks anyway.

Not sure if this is why, but I heard that it’s bad because it heats up your body (not really though). Kinda like staying out of the hot tub because it raises your body temperature.

Safe Tanning During Pregnancy
In general, it is safe to start tanning during pregnancy. The UV rays do not penetrate past the layers of your skin so your child won’t have any effects from those. Aside from the regular cautions from tanning in tanning beds, you should be aware that lying down in one may result in a rise in the temperature in the body, which could be harmful to the fetus in the first trimester. There are stand up commercial tanning beds available for those concerned with safe tanning during pregnancy. Most tanning beds also offer cooling systems which helps keep the body cool while tanning.

You see pregnant woman lying on beaches all the time. The answer is yes……ultraviolet will not hurt your baby. UV light only penetrates the epidermis and dermis…of skin for the tanning process. However, you may have a concern if you experience high blood pressure or other pregnancy related problems. One of the main dangers of pregnancy is heat. High heat levels have had effects on the fetus and cause birth defects such as spina bifida. But, most salons are air conditioned and you should not tan or lay in a bed for 20 minutes or more or in
a room that is extremely hot. As always, you should always consult your physician before tanning to rule out an potential problems.

Tanning isn’t safe, regardless. Tanned skin is damaged skin, and exposure to UV light is exposure to UV light. It’s one thing to take on any risks involved for yourself, but when you’re pregnant, your developing child doesn’t have any options.

Vanity cannot possibly be more important than being safe when you’re pregnant.
